Hexagon maze basics
A hex maze uses cells with six neighboring directions. The page still has a clear start and finish, but diagonal-looking corridors replace the repeated right angles of a rectangular grid.
Hex labels use columns x rows. The outer silhouette may look staggered because each row is offset; that is part of the grid, not a printing error.
At each cell, count the open sides rather than the number of corners you can see. Sharing a corner is not an open passage, and the outside edge of the honeycomb is still a wall unless an opening is drawn. A first hexagonal puzzle is easier to inspect at a modest size; save the dense layouts until the diagonal directions feel familiar.
| Size | First impression | Suggested solver |
|---|---|---|
| 10x10 | Open and easy to scan | New to hex geometry |
| 12x8 | Shorter page with varied angles | Quick classroom change-up |
| 16x12 | More branches without tiny cells | Regular puzzle solver |
| 24x18+ | Dense and disorienting | Hard or expert session |
What makes them different?
More possible directions change how a junction reads. A branch can peel away at a shallow angle and stay visually close to the route you meant to follow. That makes careful marking useful even when the measured solution length matches a rectangular maze.
- Orientation. Keep the page still for the first attempt so the entrance and exit remain fixed landmarks.
- Trace the center of each corridor. Cutting across a hex corner can look like a legal move when two walls nearly meet.
- Progression. Start at 10x10, then add rows before moving to hard or expert.
Printing for clarity
Normal print quality preserves the short diagonal wall segments around each cell. If a copier softens those corners, switch out of draft mode before changing the maze size.
Use the same paper size for a puzzle and its reference copy. After solving, inspect any turns that pass near the meeting point of three cells: a pencil shortcut there can accidentally cross a wall. For a paired activity, one person can trace while the other checks the allowed openings, then swap. That makes the unusual geometry something to discuss rather than a reason to rush through more pages.
- 1Download the PDF for the correct paper size.
- 2Look at three neighboring hex cells in preview and confirm every wall is distinct.
- 3Print one page and test it with the pen students will use.
Hex maze FAQs
Is a hex maze the same as a hexagon maze?
Yes—both phrases refer to mazes built on a hexagonal/hex grid.
Are hex mazes harder?
They can feel harder at first because the geometry is unfamiliar, but difficulty still depends on density and solution length.
Do hex mazes print cleanly?
Yes—choose a size that preserves line thickness and avoid shrinking too much when printing.
