Make a maze that fits your worksheet

Start with the space available on the printed page. A 10 by 10 rectangular grid leaves more room for pencil movement than a 30 by 30 grid on the same sheet. A smaller grid is a sensible first attempt for a young solver; a larger one provides more corridors to inspect, but size alone does not determine difficulty.

These starting layouts open the maze maker with a fixed seed. Change one setting at a time to compare the results.

Shape, size, and endpoints

Rectangular mazes use rows and columns with right-angle turns. Circular mazes use rings and sectors, so changing the ring count changes the radial spacing while adding sectors splits each ring into more cells. Hexagonal layouts add diagonal choices through a grid of six-sided cells. Compare shapes at modest sizes before making the paths denser.

ShapeFirst dimensionSecond dimension
Rectangular2 to 60 columns2 to 60 rows
Circular6 to 96 sectors3 to 40 rings
Hexagonal2 to 40 columns2 to 40 rows

The start and finish selectors change the endpoints, including opposite sides or random edges. Inspect the markers on the generated maze rather than assuming that the finish is always in the bottom-right corner or the center of a circle. Moving an endpoint can change the solution length without changing the overall grid size.

What braid percentage and seed change

The generator uses the DFS recursive backtracker. With braid set to zero, it builds a connected maze without extra loops. Increasing braid attempts to remove dead ends by opening additional passages. More loops can create alternative routes, so a higher braid percentage is not a reliable shortcut to a harder maze. It is a generation setting, not the percentage of the final grid occupied by loops.

A seed makes the random choices repeatable. Keep the seed, shape, dimensions, braid, and endpoint settings identical to reproduce a maze. Shuffle the seed for a fresh random maze with the same size. The algorithm selector currently offers DFS only; the theme selector does not add illustrated characters or custom outlines.

From preview to a printable page

Try the maze in the preview before saving it. Once saved, its detail page provides A4 and US Letter PDFs, an SVG, a PNG, and a separate solution SVG. Use the PDF matching your paper for a one-page worksheet; use SVG when you need a scalable vector image. A saved maze link is more useful than a screenshot when you need to return to its answer key.

Generator questions

Can I make a maze for a younger child?

Begin with a small rectangular grid and print a test page at full size. Watch whether the learner can keep a pencil inside the passages. Lower the dimensions if tracing, rather than choosing a route, is the main obstacle.

Can I use these mazes in a book I sell?

No. The current terms allow personal and classroom use, not resale, paid publications, or commercial worksheet bundles.

Does this create word mazes or mazes with rooms?

No. It creates rectangular, circular, and hexagonal passage mazes. Hidden messages, rooms, uploaded silhouettes, and custom colors are not supported.
