How to Print Mazes

How to print mazes without clipped borders or faint walls, using a six-step preview check for Letter, A4, Actual size, and Fit.

Choose a printable maze

Fast print checklist

A clean print starts in preview. Do this once before a class set, especially after someone changed the copier tray or left a two-pages-per-sheet preset turned on.

  1. 1Download PDF, then choose the version that matches the loaded paper.
  2. 2Open the system print dialog and select portrait orientation.
  3. 3Start with Actual size. Confirm the complete outer maze border is visible.
  4. 4If an edge is clipped, switch to Fit and inspect line thickness.
  5. 5Use normal quality and grayscale, then print one test page.
  6. 6Check the test with the same pencil or marker students will use before printing the rest.

The tiny preview thumbnail is too forgiving. Zoom the print preview until you can inspect a wall corner near each page edge.

Letter vs A4

Letter and A4 are close enough to look interchangeable on screen, then different enough for a strict printer to crop one edge. Letter is wider; A4 is taller. Match the file and tray instead of relying on automatic conversion.

Margins and scaling

Actual size sends the PDF at its authored dimensions. Fit reduces or enlarges it to the printer's available area. Adobe documents both behaviors; the right choice depends on what your preview shows.

  • Border missing. Use Fit after confirming the correct paper tray.
  • Walls too thin. Return to Actual size, choose a less dense maze, or raise print quality before darkening the entire page.
  • Unexpectedly small. Turn off multiple pages per sheet and booklet mode.
  • Only one corner is faint? Clean or align the printer before editing the file.

Printing FAQs

Why do my mazes get cropped?

Many printers add non-printable margins. Try “Fit to page” carefully, reduce margins, or switch to a PDF export for more consistent sizing.

Should I use ‘Fit’ or ‘Actual size’?

Start with ‘Actual size’ if the PDF is sized correctly. If it crops, try ‘Fit’ and re-check line thickness and margins.

How do I keep lines thick enough?

Avoid shrinking too much and prefer larger maze sizes for dense puzzles. If a print preview looks faint, switch to a larger size.
